Juneteenth Happenings around the DMV
On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX, and announced the end of the Civil War and slavery. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation being issued two and a half years earlier, many slaveholders continued to hold Black Americans captive. Juneteenth later became a symbolic date representing African American freedom. Today, Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the past civil rights efforts that have led us to where we are today and the ongoing need to confront and dismantle racism to ensure progress toward an equitable and just nation for everyone. (source: Anne Arundel County Public Library) Celebrate Juneteenth around DC, Maryland and Virginia with this newly updated listing of kid and family friendly happenings!
