Top Kid-friendly Activities in the DMV this Weekend (7/4 – 7/6)

Sarah and Cassandra at the Frederick Douglass historic site in SE DC
Have you visited the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in SE DC?
Happy 4th of July weekend! Have you visited the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in SE DC, yet? This weekend is the perfect time to do so! Saturday (7/5) is the National Park Service's annual "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" event where you can listen to readings of the historic speech, delivered by Frederick Douglass on July 5, 1848. In this speech, he challenged America to live up to its promise of "liberty and justice for all". Sounds like its resonates even today! 🙂 We visited the historic site on July 4th in 2023 and took a tour of the house, which is preserved by the National Park Service. The tour is pretty short and the welcome center also offers a small gift shop and a movie room that shows a documentary about Frederick Douglass's life. This experience was extremely memorable for me and I'm proud to say we visited on July 4th. Tag us if you visit; I'd love to see photos!! Happy Planning!

This Week's Book Recommendation

Show Way
This week's recommendation comes from renowned author Jacqueline Woodson. You may have seen Show Way when it was on stage at the Kennedy Center! We loved the performance almost as much as we love the book. Here's a quick synopsis: From slavery to freedom, through segregation, freedom marches and the fight for literacy, the tradition they called Show Way has been passed down by the women in Jacqueline Woodson's family as a way to remember the past and celebrate the possibilities of the future. Beautifully rendered in Hudson Talbott's luminous art, this moving, lyrical account pays tribute to women whose strength and knowledge illuminate their daughters' lives.
