Building Stories at the National Building Museum

There's an ongoing exhibit at the National Building Museum called Building Stories that you should check out! "Building Stories brings kids and adults alike on an immersive exploration of the world of architecture, engineering, construction, and design found in the pages of children’s books. Geared toward an intergenerational audience, with special attention paid to children in grades K-3 and their parents and caregivers." I love the interactiveness of this exhibit as well as the classic books that are highlighted. Tap the title above for more info!

Building Readers Club at the National Building Museum

To go along with their Building Readers exhibit, the National Building Museum has curated a free book club in collaboration with DC Public Library and DC Public Library Foundation. Children in K - 6th grade, along with their families, are invited to sign up for perks like a monthly newsletter with age-appropriate activities and book suggestions, free access to the Building Stories exhibition and special family-friendly “Club” activities at the Museum (six days per year), free books and prize giveaways + early access to Building Stories programming! Jack is a member of the club and we've attended one club activity day thus far. They have plenty of activities related to building and architecture; however, I wish they'd add more structure to it. It's more like free play. And in my opinion this club is best for younger kids ages 5 - 8!

Virginia, like Maryland, has recurring, in-person storytime events at bookstores and other community-based venues like

5 Tips for Making the Most of Storytime

  1. Arrive early to not only get a good seat but to explore the venue, especially if it’s a library or bookstore.
  2. Bring snacks and water for afterwards, especially if you have a full day of adventure ahead.
  3. Try bilingual storytimes even if your child doesn’t speak the language — they’re fun and often magical!
  4. Follow your favorite libraries and bookstores on social media for updates on cancellations and special event announcements.
  5. Explore local theaters as a storytime option! Most theaters with performances for children remake stories into shows to bring the books to life.
