I highly recommend creating your own bucket list for Black History Month exploration! Choose a theme, place, person or thing to explore more and go from there. We have a guide with tips to create one with your family too.

At Home Learning

Not every learning moment has to happen outside the home. At-home resources like books, videos, and educational programming allow you to slow down, reflect, and continue meaningful conversations about Black history throughout the month and beyond.

PBS Kids Resources

My go-to resource for learning about history with kids is PBS KIDS. They always have short, engaging clips, at-home activities, book recommendations and other features that bring history to life. For Black History Month, I recommend:

Recommended Books

Reading together is one of the most powerful ways to introduce Black history in a way that feels personal and accessible. These titles are thoughtful, engaging, and well-suited for family reading:

  • The 1619 Project: Born on the Water
Written by Nikole Hannah-Jones & Renée Watson
A beautifully illustrated adaptation that helps young readers understand the lasting impact of slavery and the strength of Black resilience in America.

  • The ABCs of Black History
    Written by Rio Cortez
An alphabet book that introduces key figures, ideas, and moments in Black history in a way that’s engaging for younger children.

  • I Am My Ancestors’ Wildest Dreams
    Written by Tanisia Moore
A powerful, affirming book that encourages children to see themselves as part of a larger legacy of strength, hope, and possibility.

Thank you for reading and celebrating Black History Month with us. I hope this guide helps your family plan meaningful experiences and continue learning together throughout February. As winter continues, be sure to explore our Winter Activities Hub for even more ideas—including museum guides, seasonal events, and ways to keep kids engaged during the colder months. I’ll continue updating this list as new events and resources become available, so stay tuned!
